Fishing "words of wisdom".....

Wind from the north... don't set forth!
Wind from the east... fish bite the least!
Wind from the south... blows bait into fish's mouth!

The walleye bite is good in the Eagle River area. Fish 25 feet of water or less off of break and edges. Use a tip-up with a golden shiner. Evening bite.

Panfish action in the Eagle River area is average. Fish the weeds in 15 feet of water or less. Anglers are finding bluegills, along with some scattered crappies. Use a small jig tipped with a waxie or crappie minnow.

***Sportsman's Lodge and Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge on the Rainy RIver and the southern end of Lake of the Woods (Baudette, MN) -- as of January 7, 2008:

On the south end of Lake of the Woods, out of Sportsman's Lodge, Baudette, MN, daily walleye and sauger limits common, with several 10 pound walleyes caught and released; and some very nice jumbo perch in the mix, as well.

The New Year's tradition at Sportsman's Lodge of great ice fishing continues. The Holidays brought out many successful angling adventures for Sportsman's Lodge guests – both at the lodge on the Rainy River and at Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge and Eagle Ridge property.

Sportsman's Captain Snag and his crew of guides have settled fishing houses in areas of 24 to 28 feet of water, with an average of 16 to 18 inches of ice. The best jig colors are gold, pink, red glow and chubby darters. There's an excellent mix of both walleye and sauger, and limits of both are being caught daily. The jumbo perch are also beginning to show up to help fill up the fish buckets.

The walleye being caught are all nice size, ranging from 15 to 17 inches, with several 10 pounders caught and released. The prevalence of the sturgeon that were showing up in the early part of December has slowed, leaving anglers concentrating on walleye and sauger.

The bite is somewhat scattered throughout the day, with the afternoon hours generally more active. However, Sportsman's guests report action all day long.

At Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge and Eagle Ridge property (40 miles out on Lake of the Woods – like a remote Canadian fly-in destination, with all the amenities) guests are going home with smiles on their faces and limits in their coolers. The best luck has been in 22 to 26 feet of water with pink jigs tipped with minnows. The bite starts slowly in the morning and heats up throughout the day. The size of the walleyes are nice, but the bite is light and attention needs to be paid to the lines in order to make a successful catch. Ice conditions continue to improve with the colder weather.

The snow conditions are excellent, and there are lots of snowmobile enthusiasts enjoying both some great fishing and super snowmobiling on the area's groomed land and lake trails. Trails in Sportsman's Lodge area have a good base of 10 to 12 inches, with more snow predicted. The Lake of the Woods trails has also been staked and groomed, so travel to Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge and Eagle Ridge property is no problem. Happy to see many of our Canadian friends visiting Sportsman's Lodges, and enjoying what the south end of Lake of the Woods offers in such wondrous abundance.

The new Sportsman's motto is: "Hookem' and cookem'." Sportsman's will be happy to clean and prepare your walleye or sauger for you while you're relaxing after a day's fishing. This is the best way to enjoy these super-fresh and delicious fish, and you'll still have some to take home with you.

The staked snowmobile trail across Lake of the Woods is in good condition and is constantly being groomed to keep the base in good shape. Anglers and snowmobilers both can have a "two-fer" - -great ice fishing and fantastic snowmobiling.

For those who crave a true get-away, with all the amenities, try Sportsman's Eagle Ridge property forty miles out on Lake of the Woods, on Oak Island. Secluded and remote, but easily accessible and served by Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge as a base camp, with great food, beverages, supplies, gas, liquor, tackle, maps and grocery items, Eagle Ridge has two cabins with accommodations for up to16 and is available for extended stays. Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge and Eagle Ridge property both provide some of the finest fishing anywhere throughout the year. (This report based on Creative Brilliance interview with Gregg Hennum, co-owner of Sportsman's Lodge.)

***Wausau/Central Wisconsin area -- as of January 7, 2008:

Strong panfish, walleye and northern bite in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area.

Phenomenal panfish bite going on right now in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area. Limiting out quickly is common. Local backwaters of the Wisconsin River have been producing tremendous amounts of nice crappies and huge gills. Work the mud flats and weed edges in 8 to 12 feet of water for the crappies. Use rosie reds or crappie sized fathead minnows on tip-downs set a foot or two off the bottom. For the bluegills, jig with a small rocker style jig or a Marmooska style jig. Try purple, green or orange, and tip the jig with a waxie or spike. Don't be surprised if you pick up a few real nice jumbo perch, as well.

The walleye bite in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area has been great for BIG fish. Numbers have been OK, but the fish have been very large. Work rock humps that top out around 8 feet and have access to 20 to 25 feet around them. Run tip-ups baited with golden shiners set a foot off the bottom. Savvy anglers try jigging the Buck Shot Rattle spoons tipped with the head of a minnow, while watching a flasher unit for suspended fish. Raise or lower the bait to the desired depth. Suspended fish are feeding fish, and will take this bait almost every time.

The northern fishing in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area is about as good as it gets. Work weed beds in 4 to 6 feet of water. If there are lots of weeds, look for the open pockets by drilling quite a few holes and actually laying down on the ice and looking into the hole. Block out any outside light and cover the entire hole with your head and arms as you look into the water. Try to see what the bottom looks like. Then once you have located the "spots," set your tip-ups so that your bait is run in two ways:

1. If you are on the weed line or edge set your bait (medium shiner or small sucker on a number 8 red, treble hook) about 12 to 14 inches off the bottom. Hook the shiner through the back, right under the dorsal fin. Be careful not to go too deep, but to hook the minnow just under the skin. Then clip one-quarter of the tail off (just about half of the top part of minnow's tail). This will keep the minnow more active, as it will be harder for it to swim with part of the tail missing.

2. If you are right in the weeds, then you need to figure out how far down the weeds are from the surface. Once that is determined, set your shiner at least 12 inches above the weeds. A lot of times savvy anglers will set their tip-ups so that the minnows are only 6 inches to a foot under the ice. Do this by determining the thickness of the ice, and add 6 to 12 inches to that distances, and that's how much line to out from your tip-up.

Never forget that both northerns and walleyes look up, so if a bait is right on the bottom or really close to the bottom, chances are the fish may not see it. But if the bait is up high, and the fish are cruising through the area, there sits the minnow right in the fishes' line of sight.

A reminder: Please practice conservation when out fishing in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area. The fishing is fabulous, and more and more folks are discovering this. Keep a few for the frying pan and release EVERYTHING else. That will insure that this wondrous resource not only maintains itself but will prosper for future years and generations.

Remember, unlike any number of the lakes further north, the daily bag limit for walleye on almost all the waters in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area remains five (5) fish. AND, when the gamefishing seasons for walleye, northern and bass close in most other areas of Wisconsin, they remain OPEN on many of the waters in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area. Come and enjoy some of the greatest fishing anywhere, any time! (This report for the Wausau/Central Wisconsin CVB based on Creative Brilliance interview with guide Phil Schweik of Hooksetters Fishing & Hunting Guide Services, Mosinee).
